Boron Atomic Structure
Boron is a metalloid Micromineral that is essential for human health which is often forgotten. In fact, most countries do not even specify a Minimum Daily Requirement for Boron. It has been proven to be an important trace mineral essential for bone growth and maintenance, greatly improves wound healing and boosts Magnesium absorption. The average Western diet provides approximately 1.5-3.0mg of Boron per day. There are many forms of Boron being sold in supplement form, some touting superior absorption. The fact is Boron is well absorbed orally and these special forms of Boron are rarely required. The most prevalent Boron supplements are combination formulas containing three types of Boron, usually the Citrate, Glycinate and Aspartate forms. This triple formula has become quite poplar as Boron benefits in the prevention and treatment of Prostate Cancer. Due to over-farming, Boron levels in soil are on the decline so it is important we ensure adequate intake of this often-overlooked mineral.
From PubMed: “The health benefits of boron are numerous in animals and humans; for instance, it affects the growth at safe intake. Central nervous system shows improvement and immune organs exhibit enhanced immunity with boron supplementation. Hepatic metabolism also shows positive changes in response to dietary boron intake. Furthermore, animals and human fed diets supplemented with boron reveal improved bone density and other benefits including embryonic development, wound healing, and cancer therapy.”
The Health Benefits of Boron:
AGING PROCESS
• May prevent damage to the body’s Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA).
CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM
• Useful in treating some types of Anemia.
• Reduces the production of C-Reactive Protein.
ENZYMES
• May inhibit both Cyclooxygenase (COX-2) and Lipoxygenase (5-LOX) thus reducing Inflammation.
• May enhance the function of Vitamin D by inhibiting Vitamin D 24-Hydroxylase (the enzyme that breaks down Vitamin D).
EXCRETORY SYSTEM
• Helps to prevent Calcium Oxalate Kidney Stones.
IMMUNE SYSTEM
• May help to prevent Cervical and Prostate Cancer and to slow the growth of existing cancer.
• Useful in the treatment of non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.
• May help to prevent Lung Cancer.
• Inhibits the excessive production of Tumor Necrosis Factor (TNF-alpha).
METABOLISM
• Fatigue and Lethargy may occur from deficiency.
• Can prevent/treat Gout.
• Concentrates in the Thyroid and Parathyroid glands and is essential for their function.
• Increases production of the antioxidant enzymes Superoxide Dismutase (SOD), Catalase and Glutathione Peroxidase.
• Increases production and activity of S-Adenosyl Methionine (SAM-e) and Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide (NAD+).
MINERAL BALANCE
• High concentrations are found in the Enamel of Teeth.
• Can increase the Hemoglobin concentration of Red Blood Cells.
• Reduces the body’s excretion of Calcium and Magnesium by up to 50%.
• Enhances the function of Copper, Phosphorus and Silicon.
• Boosts Magnesium absorption.
MUSCULOSKELETAL SYSTEM
• Concentrates in the bones and enhances Calcium absorption helping to alleviate Osteoporosis.
• Both Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis may be helped by supplementation (6-9mg daily).
NERVOUS SYSTEM
• Can improve Alertness, Attention Span and Memory.
• Poor Coordination may result from deficiency.
• Helps normalize electrical impulses in the Brain.
• Increases Alpha Brain waves.
• Reduces excessive Theta Brain Waves.
• Helpful in the treatment of Narcolepsy.
• Improves electrical conductivity in the Brain.
• Boosts Cognitive Performance.
• Helps preserve Short-Term Memory in seniors.
SEXUAL SYSTEM (Female)
• Can enhance Female Sexual Desire.
• Helps to reduce Sex Hormone Binding Globulin (SHBG) levels.
• May increase 17-Beta Estradiol.
SEXUAL SYSTEM (Male)
• Helps to reduce Sex Hormone Binding Globulin (SHBG) levels.
• Supplementation may raise Testosterone levels but not in excess of normal physiological levels.
• Helps with healthy Prostate function.
TOXINS
• Protects against Pesticide-induced oxidative stress.
• Helps guard against Heavy Metal Toxicity.
• May help to ameliorate the adverse effects of Chemotherapy Agents.
Boron Rich Foods
USAGE
Generally mineral supplements are taken with food. However, the supplement I recommend is chelated so consumption with a meal is not required. The upper limit for Boron supplementation is 20mg per day for adults. Depending on the reasons for supplementation, the usual daily dose of Boron is 6-15mg. The half-life of Boron is approximately 21 hours.
My Personal Recommendation:
Boron Citrate Molecular Structure
Boron Aspartate Molecular Structure
Boron Glycinate Molecular Structure
Triple Boron Complex Constituents
I like this Boron formula as it contains three chelated forms of Boron to cover all the bases. The three forms are absorbed at different rates which provides for a consistent release of highly absorbable Boron chelates.
