7-Keto DHEA Molecular Structure
7-Keto DHEA (7-Keto Dehydroepiandrosterone, AKA 7-Oxo-dehydroepiandrosterone) is a natural metabolite of the Adrenal hormone DHEA (Dehydroepiandrosterone). 7-Keto possesses many of the same therapeutic health benefits as its parent hormone DHEA, but 7-Keto has one major distinction, it is not metabolized into other hormones such as Testosterone and Estrogen. This is a huge advantage for people who need the therapeutic effects of DHEA but do not want to alter their Gonadocorticoid (Sex Hormone) balance. This is particularly useful in cases of Hormone Sensitive Cancer, where immune stimulation is desired without altering one’s hormone profile.
Half of the studies on file with The National Institute of Health show that 7-Keto DHEA induces significant weight loss. “7-Keto-DHEA has been commercially advertised as a dietary supplement to support weight loss. The objective of the present systematic review it to summarize the evidence supporting the use of 7-keto-DHEA in overweight and obese population. The systematic search was conducted in Medline, Embase, Cochrane Library, CINAHL, Web of Science, Scopus, ICTRP, and ClinicalTrials.gov. Additionally, reference lists of eligible studies were considered, and authors of relevant studies were contacted. Two authors independently screened the studies against the inclusion criteria and assessed their risk of bias. In total, 4 out of 686 studies were included in the review. They all held a low risk of bias. Half of them showed a significant reduction in body weight. One study found a decrease in body fat percentage and another one reported a decrease in BMI. Two studies stated an increase in resting metabolic rate. No serious adverse effects were reported.”
While most people who supplement with 7-Keto do so for weight loss, even more interesting is the research being done with its use in treating PTSD. The following excerpt is from a study performed by a company doing research on 7-Keto DHEAs effect on PTSD. “The patients treated with 7-keto DHEA originally presented with irritability, decreased energy, decreased memory and concentration, depressed or labile mood, decreased libido, anxiety, insomnia, and crying. After treatment with 7-keto DHEA, patients reported improvement in symptoms associated with severe early trauma including dissociation, avoidance and numbing, re-experiencing, hyperarousal, anger, and affective instability. Patients that can be treated with 7-keto DHEA include adults, adolescents and children.”
There are many therapeutic similarities between 7-Oxo-dehydroepiandrosterone and Dehydroepiandrosterone. For a complete list of all the therapeutic benefits of both these essential hormones click the button below. To view the unique benefits of 7-Keto, please continue to the write-up below.
The Health Benefits of 7-Keto DHEA:
CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM
• May improve the symptoms of Raynaud’s Disease.
• Increases HDL Cholesterol (the good cholesterol) and Apolipoprotein A-1 helping to clear fats from artery walls.
DIGESTIVE SYSTEM
• Helps to suppress appetite.
IMMUNE SYSTEM
• Stimulates Interleukin-2 production.
• Bolsters the Immune System by stimulating the activity of T-Lymphocytes.
METABOLISM
• People with Obesity may find that supplementation aids in weight loss due to its thermogenic effects.
• May be useful in the treatment of Wilson’s Thyroid Syndrome due to its ability to increase the production of Triiodothyronine (T3).
• Cortisol levels are decreased with supplementation.
NERVOUS SYSTEM
• Can have positive effects on memory.
• Although there are no well-defined studies, anecdotal reports show that supplementation may be helpful in the treatment of PTSD.
• Helps to alleviate symptoms of Depression.

USAGE
To receive the maximum 7-Keto DHEA benefits, it should be taken with water on an empty stomach. Do not take this supplement late in the day due to its stimulating properties. Studies have used dosages of up to 100mg twice per day. If using does higher than 50mg per day, I recommend splitting the dose in two (one dose first thing in the morning and one dose in the early afternoon). Start slowly until you find the dose that is right for you. After about two months of supplementation, I recommend testing DHEA, Thyroid and Adrenal hormone levels just to be cautious and to prevent over-supplementation. If you would like personal guidance about laboratory testing, feel free to send me your questions via the CONTACT tab in the menu.
CAUTION:
• Significant changes in Thyroid Hormone balance can be affected by supplementing with 7-Keto DHEA. Start slowly with this supplement if you are on any kind of Thyroid hormone replacement therapy. If you should experience a rapid heart rate, heart palpitations or an increase in blood pressure either reduce your dose or discontinue supplementation. These side effects are rare and usually only occur when one “over-supplements”.
