Tocotrienol Molecular Structure
Tocotrienols are one of the two related compounds known as Vitamin E. Quite simply, Tocotrienols are “the other half” of Vitamin E. Perhaps you’ve noticed the similarity of their chemical names, Vitamin E is known as Tocopherol and is an isomer of Tocotrienol. Both Vitamin E (Tocopherols) and Tocotrienols are powerful Antioxidants consisting of four fractions: Alpha, Beta, Delta and Gamma. The four Tocotrienol fractions work synergistically with each other as well as with the four Tocopherol fractions. Thus, in order to get the full protection of Vitamin E, it should be combined with Tocotrienols. While the body requires all four fractions of both Tocopherol and Tocotrienol, the Gamma fraction of both is generally considered the most efficacious. Tocotrienols have roughly 50 times the antioxidant capacity of Tocopherols (Vitamin E).
The Health Benefits of Tocotrienols:
CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM
• May reverse the Atherosclerotic plaques that occurs during the progression of Atherosclerosis.
• May prevent Ischemic Stroke and mitigate the damage caused after a Stroke.
• Can reduce Hypertension (High Blood Pressure).
EXCRETORY SYSTEM
• Helps prevent Bowel Fibrosis that occurs in Crohn’s Disease patients.
• Reduces the severity of Diabetic Nephropathy.
IMMUNE SYSTEM
• Tocotrienols may help to prevent/treat the following Cancers:
▪ Breast
▪ Liver
▪ Lung
▪ Prostate
▪ Skin (Melanoma)
▪ Stomach
• Reduces Inflammation.
• Aids in the proliferation of Lymphocytes.
• Inhibits Protein Kinase C (an enzyme that initiates some types of cancer).
• Helps to prevent damage to the body’s DNA.
METABOLISM
• Exhibits powerful Antioxidant effects that are approximately 50x that of Tocopherol (Vitamin E).
• May aid in the management of Obesity.
• Inhibits Lipid Peroxidation.
• Acts as a natural HMG-CoA Reductase Inhibitor and thus may lower Cholesterol.
• Inhibits the oxidation of Low Density Lipoproteins.
• Helps to prevent the Cross-Linking of proteins, a primary cause of aging.
• May help to treat/prevent Insulin Resistance.
• May alleviate Pancreatitis.
• Helps to lower elevated Lipoprotein (a).
MUSCULOSKELETAL SYSTEM
• Supplementation may prevent/treat Osteoporosis.
NERVOUS SYSTEM
• Helps alleviate Alcoholic Neuropathy.
• Stress-induced elevation of Norepinephrine may be prevented by supplementation.
• Neutralizes the toxic effect of Glutamic Acid on Neurons.
• Helps to inhibit Stress-Induced elevations in Cortisol.
SKIN
• Helps counteract the production of Free Radicals induced by exposure to Sunlight, especially when applied topically.
• Free Radical generation in the skin due to Ozone exposure can be mitigated by supplementation.
Health Benefits of Tocotrienols
USAGE
To maximize Tocotrienols benefits, Tocotrienols should always be taken with a meal containing dietary fats. Not doing so will reduce absorption by 64%. Tocotrienols compete with Tocopherols (Vitamin E) for absorption, so they should be taken at different times. The usual therapeutic dose of Tocotrienols is 50-100iu daily. Tocotrienols have been found to be safe at dosages up to 1,200iu daily.
