Gamma-Tocopherol Molecular Structure
Gamma-Tocopherol (Gamma-E for short) or Vitamin E is a very powerful Antioxidant comprised of not one single compound but rather a group of related compounds called Tocopherols. The four subtypes of Tocopherol are: Alpha, Beta, Delta and Gamma. In nature, all forms of Tocopherol are present in foods but always in a specific balance as they function synergistically. Very similar to Tocopherols are Tocotrienols which are considered “the other half of Vitamin E”. Blood plasma levels of Vitamin E decline with the aging process so as we get older it becomes critical that we ensure adequate intake. Illustrated below are the structures of the four types of Tocopherols. All are very similar in structure but behave differently in the body.
Alpha, Beta, Delta & Gamma Tocopherols
Some time ago there were studies released that stated supplementing with Vitamin E provided no significant protection against heart attacks. These studies were flawed for several reasons. To begin, in all of these studies a synthetic form of Vitamin E was used. Those of us involved in holistic health know that synthetic vitamins do not perform in the body in the same way as those obtained from nature. Only the Alpha form of Tocopherol was used in isolation. This is not how this antioxidant would occur in food. In order for Vitamin E to be effective it must be present in all its forms. Additionally, we now know that the different subtypes of Tocopherol compete with each other for absorption and that large dose of Alpha-Tocopherol will block the absorption of the Beta, Delta and Gamma fractions. Thus, by supplementing with only one fraction of Vitamin E the researchers created an imbalance in the body’s Tocopherols which basically rendered the supplementation ineffective. We now know that the proper balance of Tocopherols is required to obtain adequate Antioxidant protection.
Most Vitamin E supplements are mostly comprised of the Alpha form of Tocopherol. Any time Vitamin E is added to food as a preservative, it is the Alpha form. Most multivitamins only contain only Alpha-Tocopherol. This is why, for most clients, I only recommend Gamma-Tocopherol when supplementing with Vitamin E. These supplements provide balanced Tocopherol protection (all fractions) but go a little heavier on the Gamma-Tocopherol to offset an overabundance of Alpha-Tocopherol. Likewise, Gamma-E can be converted into the Alpa form in vivo, requiring less Alpha to be ingested. Products designed for topical use are a little different and mostly available only in Alpha form or a complex of Tocopherols.
This quote from PubMed calls attention to the newly found importance of Gamma-Tocopherol: “The main research activities of the last decades on tocopherols were mainly focused on alpha-tocopherol, in particular when considering the biological activities. However, recent studies have increased the knowledge on gamma-tocopherol, which is the major form of vitamin E in the diet in the USA, but not in Europe. gamma-Tocopherol provides different antioxidant activities in food and in-vitro studies and showed higher activity in trapping lipophilic electrophiles and reactive nitrogen and oxygen species. The lower plasma levels of gamma- compared to alpha-tocopherol might be discussed in the light of different bioavailability, but also in a potential transformation from gamma- into alpha-tocopherol. From the metabolism end product, only that of gamma-tocopherol (2,7,8-trimethyl-2-(beta-carboxyethyl)-6-hydroxychroman), but not that of alpha-tocopherol, was identified to provide natriuretic activity. Studies also indicate that only the gamma-tocopherol plasma level served as biomarker for cancer and cardiovascular risk.”

Vitamin E
Deficiency Symptoms
USAGE
Gamma-E is a fat-soluble vitamin and thus needs to be consumed with meals containing dietary fats for optimal absorption. Not doing so will reduce absorption by over 50%. It is important to note that Tocopherols compete with Tocotrienols for absorption. Thus, if you supplement with both Vitamin E and Tocotrienols they should be taken with different meals to maximize efficacy. The minimum recommended dose of Gamma-Tocopherol in a balanced tocopherol formula is in the neighborhood of 300mg daily. The oral product I recommend exceeds that amount and is balanced by Alpha, Beta and Delta Tocopherols.
CAUTION:
• Vitamin E can increase the effectiveness of blood thinning medications like Warfarin. Thus, if you take blood thinners you should check with your physician before adding Vitamin E to your supplement regimen.
• Vitamin E is a powerful detoxifying agent and thus can interfere with the action of some Cancer medications. Check with your Oncologist before use.
High Vitamin E Foods
My Personal Recommendations:
For oral supplementation of Gamma-E, this product is well balanced and contains an ample 465mg of Gamma-E and is what I use personally.
Gamma Tocopherol (Vitamin E) – 465mg
Topical Vitamin E Benefits
Applying Vitamin E directly to the skin has many advantages. Preparations are usually in a cream or oil base. For your preference I have listed one of each. Oil forms are best when you want a lasting more “waterproof” product. They are visible when applied and tend to be a little sticky but will remain on the skin longer than a cream. Oil preparations also tend to be more potent than creams. Creams are preferred when you would like a more “vanishing” preparation.
Topical Vitamin E Oil – 70,000IU
Topical Vitamin E Cream – 25,000IU
In my write-up above I mentioned that there are some specific instances where a water-soluble preparation of Vitamin E may be required because of one’s inability to absorb fat-soluble nutrients. For the sake of completeness, I am listing the following water-soluble preparation of Vitamin E. Please note that it is not Gamma-E.
Water Soluble Vitamin E – 20IU
To supercharge the antioxidant effects of Gamma-E consider adding Tocotrienols and Vitamin C to your wellness protocol.
