Liposomal Vitamin C Structure
Vitamin C has many amazing health benefits, its efficacy is only limited by the vitamin’s ability to be absorbed by the body. This is why intravenous Vitamin C is such a popular treatment for cancer, Lyme disease and a host of others. The downside to IV infusions of Ascorbic Acid is that they are costly, have to be administered in a doctor’s office or clinic and are time consuming, lasting as long as three hours per infusion. Many new forms of Vitamin C have been developed in an effort to get around the absorption issue within the digestive tract. One such form of Ascorbic Acid is Liposomal Vitamin C also known as Lipospheric Vitamin C.
A Vitamin C Liposome is formed when one molecule of Ascorbic Acid (or an Ascorbate) is encapsulated in a bi-layer phospholipid sphere (as shown in the illustration at the top of the page). This form of Vitamin C is not to be confused with its fat-soluble cousin Ascorbyl Palmitate. While Ascorbyl Palmitate is a truly fat-soluble form of Vitamin C, which provides it some unique properties, Lipospheric Vitamin C is still a water-soluble form of the vitamin cloaked in a phospholipid enabling it to “sneak past” certain factors that limit its absorption. The most common phospholipid used for liposomal encapsulation is Phosphatidylcholine, most commonly derived from sunflower or soy lecithin. After encapsulation, the pharmacokinetic properties of the liposome override the usual absorption pattern of Ascorbic Acid accelerating its uptake in the digestive tract. The resulting blood levels of Ascorbic Acid are higher than when ingesting non-encapsulated Vitamin C but still less than IV administration of the vitamin.
The Health Benefits of Liposomal Vitamin C:
From PubMed: “The results of the clinical studies of liposomal vitamin C by oral delivery to be 1.77 times more bioavailable than non-liposomal vitamin C. The liposomal vitamin C demonstrated higher values of Cmax, AUC0-t and AUC0-∞ related to non-liposomal vitamin C due to liposomal encapsulation. No adverse events were reported. It could be concluded that liposomal encapsulated ascorbic acid (vitamin C) shows well-organized morphological pattern, uniform particle size and highly efficient, which leads to have enhanced bioavailability.” Liposomal Vitamin C benefits health by being almost twice as absorbable as regular Vitamin C.

USAGE
There are many factors that affect one’s optimal daily dose of Vitamin C. Alcohol consumption, smoking, prescription drugs and environmental factors all increase one’s Vitamin C requirements. For optimal well-being and immune enhancement in a generally healthy person, 1,000mg three times per day is usually sufficient. If you have a chronic health issue, a total daily dose around 6,000mg per day would be more appropriate. For serious illnesses such as cancer, dosages in excess of 10,000mg per day are not uncommon. Unlike non-encapsulated Vitamin C which is taken with meals, Liposomal Vitamin C should be taken in between meals at least 30 minutes before or two hours after eating. The reason for this is you do not want the liposphere to be damaged by the digestive process. In order for this form of Vitamin C to be effective it must pass into the small intestine intact and undamaged.
CONTRAINDICATIONS:
• Due to its high Choline content, people suffering from Bipolar Disorder should not supplement with this preparation of Vitamin C.
• It is well documented that certain cancers demonstrate altered Choline metabolism. Therefore, men with Prostate Cancer should not use this form of Vitamin C. Likewise, it is advisable that women with Ovarian Cancer should avoid excess Choline as well. If you have any doubts as to whether or not your cancer is “choline-sensitive”, check with your oncologist before using this product.
My Personal Recommendations:
You will find many forms of Liposomal Vitamin C on the market today, including tablets, capsules, soft gels, powders and liquid. The best way by far to purchase this supplement is in its liquid form with the least number of added ingredients. I do not like the tablet form because I have not seen any studies proving that the liposome remains intact during processing. When this supplement is created, it is created as a liquid and in my opinion should remain in that form. Less processing means less chance of compromising the delicate structure of the liposome. There are quite a few brands out there that claim to be Lipospheric Vitamin C but are merely a solution of some form of Ascorbic Acid and Lecithin. Merely combining the two ingredients does not produce a liposphere. These brands are often inexpensive, leading you to believe that you are getting a “great deal” but in reality, are just a waste of money.
